How to Install an eSIM on iPhone — Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Installing an eSIM on your iPhone takes about 60 seconds. No QR code, no app, no second device needed. Here's exactly what to do, screen by screen.
Compatible iPhones
All iPhones from 2019+ support eSIM: iPhone XR, XS, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and all SE (2nd gen+). iPhone 14 and newer (US model) are eSIM-only — no physical SIM slot at all.
Step by Step
- Buy your eSIM — Pick your destination and plan at manamobile.net. After payment, you'll get a confirmation email within seconds.
- Open the email on your iPhone — The email contains a "Tap to Install eSIM" button. Tap it.
- Your iPhone opens the eSIM installer — A system dialog appears: "Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed." Tap Continue.
- Label your eSIM — Choose a label like "Travel" or "manaMOBILE." This helps you identify it later in Settings.
- Set your default line — Choose your home SIM as the default for calls and messages. Set the manaMOBILE eSIM for Cellular Data only.
- Data switching OFF — Turn off "Allow Cellular Data Switching." This prevents your phone from accidentally using your home SIM's data and triggering roaming charges.
- Done — The eSIM appears in Settings → Cellular. It activates automatically when you arrive at your destination and connect to a local tower.
Critical Settings — Don't Skip These
- Turn off Data Switching — Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → uncheck "Allow Cellular Data Switching"
- Set Data Roaming ON for the eSIM — Travel eSIMs require data roaming to be enabled (it's not real roaming, it just connects to partner networks)
- Wait until you arrive — Don't try to activate before your trip. The eSIM activates on first local tower connection.
Troubleshooting
"Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change"
This usually means you're trying to install while on a VPN or poor WiFi. Disconnect the VPN, move to a spot with better WiFi, and try again.
The install link doesn't open anything
Make sure you're opening it on your iPhone, not on a laptop or iPad. The eSIM install link only works on the device itself. Forward the email to yourself and open it on your phone.
eSIM shows "No Service" after arriving
Give it 2-3 minutes. On first connection, the eSIM negotiates with local towers. If still "No Service" after 5 minutes, toggle Airplane Mode on/off. If that fails, go to Settings → Cellular → [eSIM] → Network Selection → turn off Automatic, select a different carrier, then switch back.
